One university, two industries: Zhengzhou University of Light Industry is widely known as China’s battery-talent cradle and tobacco-industry Whampoa. The double nickname grew out of its roots in the light industries of Henan, and the portfolio has widened since, into frozen food, hydrogen energy and smart manufacturing.
Today the academic map runs from food to electrons. Three provincial backbone discipline groups anchor the university, in food science and engineering, smart manufacturing of electrical equipment and hydrogen energy, alongside 22 provincial key disciplines and five ESI-ranked fields, with engineering and agricultural science in the global top 0.3 percent. Doctoral programs cover four first-level fields, and 25 undergraduate majors carry national first-class status.
The faculty includes some 300 national and provincial talent citations, with over 950 senior-title holders and 1,100-plus doctorates. Research runs through 80 national and provincial platforms, from a national-local joint engineering center for noodle-based foods to a ministry key laboratory for cold-chain food safety, and the university has taken on upwards of 4,000 projects, won six national science awards and 220-plus provincial awards, and ranked among China’s top 100 universities for technology transfer for four straight years.
International engagement arrived early for Henan: ZZULI was the province’s first public university with Sino-foreign programs, and it opened the province’s first IELTS center, once praised by the British embassy as one of the best in China. Today it operates a joint college with Italy’s University of Camerino, ten international joint laboratories, and partnerships with some 100 universities in more than 30 countries.
The university spreads over about 147 hectares across three campuses in Zhengzhou and Yuzhou, with more than 36,000 students and over 2,600 staff. Its libraries hold 2.5 million printed volumes, and the school has produced 200,000-plus graduates since the college era began.
The light-industry identity goes back to the beginning. Its lineage starts with a Zhengzhou electrical school founded in 1956 by the national light industry ministry; in 1977 the State Council approved the Zhengzhou Institute of Light Industry under the same ministry. Management shifted to Henan province in 1998, and the institute later grew into a university.
Proof of the training shows in the products. ZZULI’s food teams helped break bottlenecks in quick-frozen and meat products, part of Henan’s shift from granary to the world’s table, while its engineers worked on multi-motor control systems and new energy vehicle powertrains used by the world’s largest bus makers. “Nothing is too difficult for the willing mind” is the motto, and the battery labs and food factories that keep proving it are scattered across the campus.
