Wuyi University sits in tea country: its campus lies in Wuyishan, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of China’s first national parks, and tea runs through its laboratories as much as the hills around it. The province’s key laboratory for tea-industry big data is here, alongside a collaborative innovation center for China’s oolong tea industry.
It is a public undergraduate institution with an applied orientation and master’s degree-granting status. About 15,000 full-time students study across 42 undergraduate programs, with 25 national or provincial first-class programs and three professional master’s categories. Its campus covers about 200 hectares in the mountains of northern Fujian.
Its distinctive fields are tea, tourism, arts and ecology. Eight provincial key disciplines and 24 platforms at provincial level or above support the work, including a provincial collaborative innovation center for the bamboo ecology industry and an engineering research center for bamboo materials. On the humanities side, a Song-Ming Neo-Confucianism research center run with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences gives the philosophy of the region’s classical scholars its home here.
The faculty of more than 1,100 staff counts half its teachers with senior titles and 94 percent with graduate degrees. Wuyi University is a national demonstration school for innovation and entrepreneurship, and its students have collected awards in national competitions including the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and the Challenge Cup.
Wuyi University is approved to receive Chinese government scholarship students, is a Fujian base for overseas Chinese-language education and a center for Chinese traditional culture experience, and holds eligibility to enroll students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Selected undergraduates join a joint training program with Renmin University of China. It was the first in China to pioneer a 4+0 model for Fujian-Taiwan cooperation in training applied talent, and now works with 20-plus universities in Taiwan.
On the slopes of a mountain famous for tea, the university grows its own kind of talent: applied, close to the land, and at home in the laboratories where tea and bamboo meet data.
