Anhui University of Technology was born from steel and now studies metallurgy for space. In 2026 the university in Ma’anshan, a city beside the Yangtze and next door to Nanjing, opened a research institute for deep-space metallurgy and extreme materials, the latest step in a history that began in 1958 with a school for the local steel industry.
That school became the Ma’anshan Iron and Steel Institute in 1977 under the national metallurgy ministry, was renamed the East China Metallurgy Institute in 1985, and in 2000 merged with a provincial business college to take its present name. Today it is a doctoral-degree university with a distinctly industrial flavor, supported jointly by the science ministry and the provincial government.
Sixty undergraduate programs feed 26,000 undergraduates and 5,500 postgraduates, with five doctoral disciplines and two postdoctoral stations. Four subjects, from materials science and engineering to chemistry and computer science, sit in the global top 1 percent of ESI rankings. Twenty undergraduate programs hold national first-class status, and 15 programs have passed professional accreditation, the most of any provincial university in Anhui.
Industry ties run through the research base. A low-carbon metallurgy project helped Baowu Group, China’s largest steelmaker, build the world’s first low-carbon ironmaking blast furnace, and the university leads the drafting of 15 international standards for metal-ceramic coatings, placing it near the top of Chinese universities in that field. Its 39 provincial-and-ministerial platforms include a ministry-level international science cooperation base, and the new institute for deep-space metallurgy and extreme materials points toward an age beyond steel.
The faculty of 2,168 includes more than 900 with doctorates and 22 national-level talents, and the school’s competitive streak shows in student competitions: nine RoboCup China championships and a national gold medal in the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition two years running. Around 95 percent of graduates find jobs or continue study. From a steel-industry school of 1958 to a university building labs for deep-space metallurgy, Anhui University of Technology has kept its founding instinct: make things that matter, and make them better.
