Hunan University of Arts and Science makes its home in Changde, a city that calls itself the home of the Peach Blossom Spring, and the school has two older reputations to match: it is known across northwestern Hunan as a cradle of teachers and a storehouse of agricultural wisdom. Now it is reaching for something newer, laying out synthetic biology as a strategic field, after winning the right to award master’s degrees in 2024.
The university began in 1958 as a normal college, gathered the resources of several other local institutions over the decades, became a full undergraduate university in 1999, took its present name in 2003, entered first-tier admissions in 2020 and won master’s degree rights in 2024. Its twin traditions, teaching and agriculture, still shape the curriculum.
Eighteen colleges and schools offer 44 undergraduate programs across eleven fields, with five national first-class programs, eight national first-class courses and three professional master’s categories. Some 30,000 full-time students are taught by 1,287 full-time faculty members, 507 of them with doctorates, on a campus of about 2,000 mu, some 133 hectares.
Research mixes scale with focus: more than 100 national projects and 5,000 papers in recent years, 1,500 patents and other intellectual property, and eight national platforms among dozens of provincial ones. The flagship now is a synthetic-biology drive, with an industry innovation center and new academic units built around it, alongside 500-plus enterprise partnerships and a faculty program that sends professors and doctors into local industry.
International links reach universities in more than 20 countries, with three Sino-foreign cooperative programs serving about 1,300 students and some 30 foreign teachers on campus; some 400 students from 35 countries have studied here. The university also runs a nationally recognized exhibition on the Japanese army’s wartime germ-warfare crimes, a study program that has become a national defense education base.
Training the region’s teachers, feeding its fields, and now betting on biology and industry: Hunan University of Arts and Science has built that portfolio since a normal college of 1958 became a master’s-granting university of 2024. The Peach Blossom Spring, in the old story, was a place that stayed the same; this city’s university is making sure it does not.
