East China University of Technology

The first institution of higher learning in China’s nuclear industry opened in 1956 as a geology school, and it grew into East China University of Technology, known as the cradle of China’s nuclear geoscience. Over seven decades the school has produced more than 270,000 graduates for the country’s atomic program, and it is still called the first college of China’s nuclear industry.

Its campus moved three times and its name changed seven, following the fortunes of the industry it served, and it is now jointly run by the Jiangxi government with the national defense science and technology administration, the ministry of natural resources and the China National Nuclear Corporation. Two campuses, in Nanchang and in Fuzhou, cover some 3,700 mu, about 247 hectares.

Four first-level doctoral programs, 19 master’s disciplines and 69 undergraduate majors, 20 of them with national first-class status, serve some 30,000 students. Five disciplines, from chemistry and engineering to earth science and materials, sit in the ESI global top 1 percent, five disciplines are rated national defense specialties, and eight programs have passed engineering education accreditation.

Research follows the atom. The school holds a national key laboratory for uranium resources and nuclear remote sensing, the country’s first national key laboratory in the nuclear resources and environment field, plus the Donghua accelerator-based neutron source, a major scientific instrument, and an IAEA reference laboratory, among 30-plus national and provincial platforms. Annual research funding reaches 340 million yuan, and awards include a national science and technology second prize and a national defense science and technology special prize.

International ties run through the International Atomic Energy Agency: the school is a member of the IAEA’s high-level radioactive waste disposal collaboration center and one of 14 Chinese universities in its education and training agreement, it hosts an IAEA reference laboratory and trains IAEA students, and it co-hosts a Confucius Institute in Nepal at Tribhuvan University. A research center built with the Russian health ministry, nearly 400 international students from 41 countries, and the China (Jiangxi)-Hungary higher education alliance, which the school initiated, round out the picture.

China’s nuclear geoscience cradle has come a long way from a 1956 geology school: its teaching and research now cover the full chain of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium exploration to nuclear remote sensing, and its graduates have helped build the country’s nuclear standing. For a university founded on uranium, the fuel cycle is not a metaphor; it is the whole job description.
