Of the first six aviation universities founded in new China, one sits in Nanchang, and its graduates now account for 80 percent of the specialized technical workforce in nondestructive testing at the country’s aero-engine manufacturers, and 40 percent in hot-working processes. Nanchang Hangkong University, as it is known, sends a third of its graduates into the aviation and defense industries every year, a pipeline that has run since 1952.
The school was created in 1952 and answered in turn to the aviation industry ministry, the ministry of aerospace industry and the China Aviation Industry Corporation, before moving to joint central-provincial management in 1999. It is now co-built by the Jiangxi government and the national defense science and technology administration, and it won the right to award doctorates in 2024. Three campuses in Nanchang, Qianhu, Shanghai Road and Aviation City, cover about 3,500 mu, some 233 hectares.
Aviation defines the curriculum: 41 programs in aviation and defense fields make up 76 percent of the school’s offerings, a focus kept since 1952. Twenty-one programs hold national first-class status, 13 have passed engineering education accreditation, and three disciplines, engineering, materials science and chemistry, rank in the ESI global top 4 per mille, with a fourth in the top 1 percent. Three first-level doctoral disciplines and some 28,000 students round out the academic side.
Research sits close to the engine. The school hosts the Jiangxi innovation center of a national laboratory network for aero-engines, it is the only university in the country holding a UTC with Aero Engine Corporation of China, and it runs the province’s only international joint laboratory, built with the Spanish National Research Council, among 24 provincial-and-ministerial platforms. Annual research funding has passed 300 million yuan, and awards include a second prize in the national technology invention award and a Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation prize for science and technology innovation.
Its faculty of 2,100-plus, including 400-plus specialists named to national and provincial talent programs, teaches a school whose alumni include the aviation expert Xiang Qiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Abroad, the university cooperates with over 70 universities in more than 30 countries, opened the International School of Intelligent Science and Engineering, a ministry-approved Sino-foreign institution, in 2025, and hosts some 300 international students from 44 countries.
Nanchang Hangkong University is judged by what its graduates fly, build and repair, and by that measure it has earned its place among China’s six founding aviation universities: nearly 240,000 graduates, a third of them serving the aviation and defense industries, and a name that has answered to the country’s aircraft makers for more than 70 years, growing from a school of 1952 into a doctoral university of 2024.
