Among its seven colleges, Gannan College of Science and Technology runs one that very few universities anywhere can match: a low-altitude technology college, devoted to the drones and air-mobility engineering of the coming decades. The school that runs it was born in 2020, converted from a branch campus into a public college, and it has built the other half of its identity on industry: a provincial key electronic information college built with Huawei and Gree.
The college traces its history to 2001, when it opened as a campus of what became Jiangxi University of Science and Technology, and it was officially converted in December 2020 to the public Gannan College of Science and Technology, passing the ministry’s teaching evaluation in 2025. It sits by the Zhang River in Ganzhou, a city that calls itself the cradle of the Hakka people and the world’s orange town, on a campus of 929 mu, about 62 hectares.
Thirty-four undergraduate programs span seven fields, organized into six clusters that follow the region’s industries, from mining and metallurgy to mechanical and electrical engineering and electronic information. The research base includes a national industry-association key laboratory, a provincial key laboratory and 28 platforms in all, feeding a curriculum built around engineering training and robotics.
A faculty of 472, 95.76 percent of them with master’s or doctoral degrees, has produced nearly 300 high-level papers in five years and won eight national natural science fund projects. Students have collected 1,944 national competition awards in the same period, placing the college 71st among the country’s newer undergraduate universities.
Its graduates, nearly 40,000 of them, fill the factories and offices of southern Jiangxi, and international ties run from the University of Northampton in Britain and TU Dresden in Germany to INTI International University in Malaysia and the University of Minho in Portugal. Seven modern industry colleges, including the Huawei-Gree electronic information college and a smart manufacturing college, keep the classrooms wired to real production.
Reborn from a branch campus in 2020, Gannan College of Science and Technology has kept its parent’s engineering DNA while adding a few flights of its own: a low-altitude school, a Huawei-built college, and a city whose industries are hungry for its graduates.
