The same thread runs from a mining department founded in 1895 to a university whose safety science program now ranks among the best in China. Xi’an University of Science and Technology traces its line through Beiyang University’s mining and metallurgy department, the Northwestern Engineering Institute, and a brief stay inside Xi’an Jiaotong University, before it emerged in 1958 as the Xi’an Mining Institute, one of only two five-year mining colleges under the old coal ministry.
The mining pedigree shaped everything that followed. The school was renamed the Xi’an Institute of Science and Technology in 1999 and took its present name in 2003, but its center of gravity never moved: coal, mining and safety science still define the university, which is why it now sits inside China’s emergency management system as a joint university of the Ministry of Emergency Management and Shaanxi province.
Its academic flagship is safety science and engineering, rated A-minus in the fourth national discipline assessment, anchored by a national key discipline in safety technology and a ministry key laboratory for coal mine safety. Eight first-level doctoral programs, seven postdoctoral stations and 27 first-level master’s programs support a student body of about 27,000, and six fields, from engineering and materials to chemistry and agricultural science, rank in the ESI global top 1 percent.
Research follows the mine: 38 provincial-level and above research platforms, including a national engineering research center for mine safety and a ministry engineering research center for western coal mine safety, drive work on intelligent mining and disaster prevention. Since 2021 the university has taken in over 2.8 billion yuan in research contracts and won 360-plus provincial-level and above science awards.
The faculty of about 2,300 includes one academician and 191 winners of national and provincial talent titles, with a second tier of 400-plus part-time experts. Internationally, the university works with over 60 foreign universities, runs joint laboratories with partners in Iran and Kazakhstan, and has trained hundreds of international students from the Belt and Road region.
The ground beneath our feet needs understanding, and the people who provide it come from here. Over a century of mining education, from the students of 1895 to the safety engineers of today, has been built on exactly that point.
