The safety of two of China’s most famous structures owes something to this campus. Guangzhou University’s engineers developed seismic and vibration-reduction technology used in the Canton Tower, the city’s needle-shaped landmark, and in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and that practical reach is typical of a university that took the name of its city when it was formed by merger in 2000, though its roots go back more than ninety years.
Three campuses, in the university town, Guihuagang and Huangpu, host about 29,600 undergraduates and 9,500 postgraduates. The university runs twenty-six colleges across eleven discipline fields, with fourteen first-level doctoral programs, eight postdoctoral stations and seventy-six undergraduate programs, a majority of them in science and engineering.
Research strength clusters around infrastructure and information. Earthquake and disaster mitigation, cyberspace security, artificial intelligence and clean energy materials lead a platform base of six national and 94 provincial research facilities, and 13 disciplines rank in the ESI global top 1 percent, with engineering in the top 1 per mille. The university placed 95th among mainland universities in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
The city partnership extends into higher education itself. Guangzhou University co-founded the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), which opened in 2022, and launched the alliance of Guangzhou’s sister-city universities, which now links 30 universities in 24 countries. Its international students come overwhelmingly from Belt and Road countries, with more than half studying for graduate degrees.
Teaching is anchored by forty national first-class programs and three national model teaching teams, and the faculty of about 2,140 full-time researchers includes four full-time members of the Chinese academies. The university has also built a national maker space and a national innovation and entrepreneurship institute, feeding its students into the region’s startup economy.
The university that shares its name with the city keeps doing what the city does best: build, connect and protect. In the towers above Guangzhou and the bridge across its estuary, some of the university’s work is already standing, and the campus below keeps training the engineers who will design the next ones.
