Eighty percent of Guangdong’s primary and secondary school principals have trained here, and so have more than half of its key teachers. The claim, printed on the official pages of Guangdong University of Education, makes the university in effect the training ground of the province’s schools.
The school behind the statistic has moved more than once. It began in 1955 as the Guangdong Institute of Educational Administration, became the Guangdong Institute of Education in 1960, was suspended in 1970 and relocated to Zhaoqing, and reopened in 1978. In 2010 the Ministry of Education approved its conversion to a regular undergraduate university under the present name, with bachelor’s degree rights following in 2014 and approval to cultivate master’s programs in 2021.
What the university trains its students to do is narrow on purpose. Its stated specialty is preschool, primary and special education, the smaller and more specialized ends of the teaching profession that larger universities often treat as afterthoughts. Two provincial key disciplines, education and mathematics, anchor the teacher training programs.
About 15,700 full-time undergraduates study across two campuses in Guangzhou, taking 46 undergraduate programs offered by 19 schools and departments, while another 28,000 adults take continuing education courses. The faculty numbers 958, and the university runs seven education groups with 36 affiliated schools across the province, a structure that puts its students directly into classrooms.
Beyond the campus, the university operates national training bases for school principals and teachers, together with provincial offices for teacher development, principal training and moral education research. It is, in effect, the professional home of the province’s teaching workforce.
The university has followed the province’s schools through every turn, from the institute of 1955 to the campus of today, and the reason is written in its own slogan: born for basic education, thriving on it. Guangdong’s classrooms keep changing, and this campus keeps changing with them.
