For thirty years Shenzhen Polytechnic was the name on the campus, and the campus became the benchmark of Chinese vocational education. In June 2023 the Ministry of Education approved its elevation to Shenzhen Polytechnic University, and the old honorific stuck: Chinese media had long called it the banner of China’s higher vocational education.
The school’s record explains the name. It won a special prize in the national teaching awards in 2018, the first time any institution in Guangdong, at any level, had taken the top prize, and its students have collected 42 first prizes in world vocational skills competitions and 17 gold medals in the national innovation competition, a total no other vocational college has matched. Thirty-three undergraduate and 84 diploma programs now serve more than 30,000 students on three campuses covering about 267 hectares.
The faculty of more than 1,600 full-time teachers includes a majority with doctorates, and the university has jointly trained nearly 400 master’s and doctoral students with research universities in Hong Kong and mainland China. In 2025 it was approved to build its own professional master’s programs, a first step toward graduate education under its own name. About 200,000 graduates have left the campus since 1993.
With Huawei it co-founded a city-level industry-education alliance that was among the first 28 national pilot bodies, and it has built 17 industry colleges with leading firms. Internationally, it has worked with 222 institutions in 46 countries and regions, run 19 overseas Shenzhen digital workshops, and proposed the Shenzhen Accord, the first international mutual-recognition framework for vocational learning outcomes.
The university that taught China’s vocational schools how to be excellent now teaches them how to become universities. The banner that flew over Shenzhen Polytechnic in 1993 has been raised, not lowered, over a university of the same name.
