A conservatory named for Tchaikovsky inside a normal university sounds like a mismatch, but Chongqing Normal University makes it work. The school, a training ground for teachers since the early twentieth century, now runs a Sino-Russian music institute with the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, one of the most storied music schools in the world. The pairing is unusual, and it captures a university that has always been willing to surprise.
Its institutional roots go back further than the founding date. The university was established in 1954, among the first normal universities of the new China, and traces its lineage to a government teacher-training school created in 1906. It gained master’s authority in 1986, was approved for doctoral programs in 2018, and today spreads across three campuses covering about 179 hectares, with more than 35,000 students, including 26,000-plus undergraduates, 8,400 postgraduates, and almost 500 international students.
For a normal university, the academic range is broad. Twelve fields, from education and literature to science and cross-disciplinary studies, are covered by 4 doctoral programs, 24 master’s programs, and 20 professional master’s categories, with 75 undergraduate programs on top. Five subjects have entered the top 1 percent of the ESI rankings, and the university organizes its strengths into six clusters, led by mathematics and information science and by teacher education.
Research has grown with the school’s ambitions. It is home to one of China’s first applied mathematics centers, plus 73 provincial and ministerial platforms, and over the past decade its faculty have carried out 435 national projects, published 11,927 papers, and won 133 science awards, including a second prize of the National Natural Science Award. The teaching body counts 2,200-plus staff, nearly 1,000 of them with senior titles and roughly 1,100 with doctorates, backed by some 30 scholars at national level and some 280 selected for provincial talent programs.
The teacher-training core remains the point of the school. Its record includes 11 national teaching achievement awards, and 17 of its teacher-education programs have passed the second-level professional accreditation, a mark of quality for the profession. The campus arts scene has found a national stage as well: the university has appeared seven times on CCTV’s “May Flowers” campus arts show and was named a contributor at the 2025 Spring Festival Gala.
The international dimension is where the surprises keep coming. CQNU cooperates with institutions in over 30 countries and regions, runs four Confucius Institutes, and is the only Chinese member university of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University in Chongqing. Its newest venture is the Chongqing Tchaikovsky Conservatory, a joint institute with the Moscow conservatory where students study music performance under a curriculum shaped by both traditions. From a classroom for rural teachers to a stage for piano concertos, the university has kept one habit for more than a century: teaching what the region needs next.
