Fuyang, in northern Anhui, is the birthplace of Laozi and Zhuangzi, the home of the statesmen Guan Zhong and Bao Shuya, and the birthplace of the poet Cao family of the Three Kingdoms era; the Song-dynasty writers Yan Shu, Ouyang Xiu and Su Shi all served as officials here. The university that carries the city’s name, Fuyang Normal University, has been called the cradle of basic education in northern Anhui, a title earned over seven decades of training teachers for the region.
The school was founded in 1956, began admitting undergraduates in 1977, and took the name Fuyang Normal College a year later. It became Fuyang Normal University in 2019, joined the ministry’s teacher-education partnership program in 2022, and in 2024 was approved as a key doctoral-degree cultivation unit of Anhui.
Seventy-one undergraduate programs, six of them national first-class, and 23 master’s authorization points serve 20,000 undergraduates and 1,600 postgraduates. Its 210,000 alumni include the academicians Fang Weihai and Chang Kai of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the school’s record includes three national science second prizes and a major national social-science project.
A faculty of 1,400-plus full-time teachers is reinforced by 109 part-time professors, among them four academicians including Liu Depei and Chen Guoliang. Five years of research have produced 1,600-plus projects, more than 600 at provincial level or above, and a student body that has appeared on the national university competition leaderboard eight times in a row.
Its campus of about 114 hectares in Fuyang houses a Huai River culture research center, fitting for a city that grew up along that river. A provincial base for Chinese-language education and partnerships with more than 50 universities abroad carry the school’s reach beyond the region. In a city where philosophy and poetry were once the local industries, Fuyang Normal University has made teaching the export, sending a steady stream of educators to the schools of northern Anhui.
