A finance university that teaches law to its economists and economics to its lawyers, Guangdong University of Finance and Economics has built its identity on a single idea: business and law belong in the same classroom. Founded in 1983 as a college of finance and economics, it became a business college in 1985, a university in 2013, and a doctoral-granting institution in 2021, and it now serves a region where commerce and regulation have always traveled together.
The two campuses frame the mission. The Guangzhou campus sits in the Pazhou area, now a national AI and digital economy pilot zone and home to the city’s convention center, while the Foshan campus occupies a scenic lake district in that city. Together they cover about 1,520 hectares and enroll nearly 29,000 full-time students in fifty-five undergraduate programs.
The academic core is a triangle of applied economics, business administration and law. Two first-level doctoral programs, in applied economics and national security studies, sit above eleven first-level master’s programs and twenty-three professional master’s categories, with eighteen national first-class undergraduate programs. The national center for economic and management experimental teaching was among the first two such centers in China, a credential that says much about how the school teaches.
Research feeds policy. Faculty have drafted six local laws and regulations and produced more than 500 research and consulting reports adopted by governments at all levels, and the university’s journal, published under the university’s name, is a CSSCI source with a national reputation. Its Goethe Language Center is the only official German-language training body in southern China.
The university’s network spreads through the region’s finance industry. Over 200,000 graduates have gone into banking, accounting, law and commerce across the Pearl River Delta, and the school cooperates with more than 90 overseas institutions in 30-plus countries, leading the Greater Bay Area’s digital economy alliance among universities.
Four decades after it opened with a class of undergraduates, the school still teaches by its founding equation: in Guangdong, the deal and the rulebook belong together, and the people who understand both run the region.
