Few universities anywhere are as firmly anchored to the sea as this one. Guangzhou Maritime University, the only independent maritime university in southern China, is also a university in waiting: founded in 1964 as a shipping school under the national transport ministry, it is the institution on which Guangzhou is building its future Jiaotong University, a project the city has been advancing since 2018. Until the new name arrives, the school keeps doing what it has done for sixty years: train the people who run China’s ships, ports and sea routes.
The school began in 1964 as the Guangzhou Maritime School, created to serve maritime transport and train seafarers, and carried that name until 2013, when it became Guangzhou Maritime University. Its two campuses sit at historic harbors on the Pearl River, in Huangpu and Haizhu, on ground tied to the ancient maritime Silk Road.
Engineering ranks in the ESI global top 1 percent, and the university holds three provincial key disciplines in ship and ocean engineering, transport engineering and communication engineering. Five provincial first-class programs and seven provincial featured programs cover its core fields, and its nautical training meets the international STCW seafarer standards, letting its graduates sail on foreign-flagged ships.
The nickname its alumni use, the cradle of navigators, is backed by the record. Two of its captains served as escort commanders on the Chinese navy’s anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden, the school has produced masters and chief engineers honored with national labor awards, and its logistics graduates make up an estimated seven in ten of the professionals in Guangdong’s logistics industry. In 2023 the school gained its first academician among alumni.
About 20,000 students study across the two campuses, taught by a faculty that has drawn nearly 300 high-level recruits in five years. The university is one of China’s fourteen pilot institutions for building a transport power, the first in southern China, and it runs programs in everything from ship engineering to port and waterway engineering.
The school that trained the captains of the South China Sea is building toward a bigger name, and the sea is not waiting. When Guangzhou Jiaotong University opens its gates, it will inherit a maritime tradition six decades deep, and a campus that has never stopped putting its people on the water.
