Guangzhou’s first public vocational college has carried three names and one mission since 1993. It opened as Panyu Polytechnic, became Panyu Vocational College and later Guangzhou Panyu Vocational College, and in June 2025 the Ministry of Education approved its present name and university status. Behind the renaming lies a simple fact: the college kept growing until the word university fit.
The campus was built with donations from Panyu-born philanthropists, including the Hong Kong magnate Henry Fok Ying-tung and Edmund Ho, the first chief executive of Macao, alongside other benefactors from Hong Kong and Macao. Their money built a college that became a national demonstration institution in 2009 and passed the first round of the Double High program with an excellent rating in 2025.
Today 53 programs across 11 professional clusters serve about 12,700 full-time students on two campuses in Guangzhou, with 13 four-year undergraduate programs that include intelligent manufacturing, new energy vehicles, software engineering and jewelry design, a field where the region’s goldsmithing tradition meets modern materials.
The faculty of 944 includes 188 with doctorates and more than 80 percent of professional course teachers rated as dual-qualified, and the school has won 111 teaching awards at national, provincial and city level, two of them first prizes at the national level. Ninety-eight percent of recent graduates found work within a year, with nearly 90 percent staying in the Greater Bay Area.
Internationally the university has signed more than 60 cooperation agreements with institutions in over 20 countries and regions, set up five overseas branch academies, two Lingnan craftsman academies and five teacher training bases abroad, and had 9 professional teaching standards and 27 course standards adopted by overseas partners.
Whatever name it carries next, the school will be tested the same way: whether the jeweler’s bench and the chip line have graduates ready to work them. The question dates to 1993 and outlives every renaming.
