The man who won China’s first world championship trained here. Rong Guotuan, who took the world table-tennis title in 1959, studied at Guangzhou Sport University, and the school founded in 1956 has gone on to produce more than sixty world champions, including Qi Lieyun, China’s first swimming world-record holder, and Chen Xiaoxia, its first female diving world champion. The lineage from that first gold medal runs through the campus like a standard.
Guangzhou Sport University was among the earliest sports universities of the new China and remains the only independent sports institution in southern China with a complete degree pipeline from bachelor’s through doctoral levels. It won doctoral status in 2024, completing a climb that began with graduate education in 1979, and its sport science discipline holds peak-discipline status in Guangdong.
The campus sits on the central axis of Guangzhou, the capital of the Greater Bay Area, and its location shapes its work. About 8,000 students, including 1,300 postgraduates, study in twenty-two undergraduate programs across six discipline fields, taught by a faculty that includes international and national referees and winners of national science awards.
National teams are part of the curriculum. The university is the main builder of the National Badminton Academy, a joint project of the state sports administration and Guangdong, and its football academy holds the only national key football-college status in southern China. Seven of its students joined China’s delegation at the Paris Olympics in diving, hockey and other events, returning with two gold medals, a silver and a bronze.
Research serves sport at the elite level. Twenty key platforms, including a provincial key laboratory for physical activity and health and a state sports administration laboratory, support work with national teams in badminton, judo, wrestling and other sports, and the university co-publishes an English-language sports medicine journal listed in a national excellence program.
The first champion came from here, and the campus has spent six decades making sure the next ones do too, measured not only in medals but in the coaches and teachers it sends into schools across the region. The standard Rong Guotuan set in 1959 still stands at the top of the campus.
