Hebei University of Architecture teaches building in a city built for winter sports. Its campus sits in Zhangjiakou, host city of the 2022 Winter Olympics, and its name sets out the curriculum in two words: civil engineering and architecture, the fields that have defined the school since 1950.
The university was one of the first institutions to grant bachelor’s degrees when the State Council approved the list in 1978, and gained master’s-granting status in 2013. For more than seventy years it has supplied the construction trades of Hebei, and its graduates now work in building projects across the country.
Eleven colleges offer 47 undergraduate programs, led by three national first-class programs in civil engineering, architecture and building environment and energy engineering, with seven more rated first-class at provincial level. Master’s degrees are awarded in architecture and civil engineering as first-level disciplines and in six professional categories, among them civil and hydraulic engineering and mechanical engineering.
Its faculty of 809 includes 332 with senior titles, and 14,611 full-time students study on a campus of 810 mu, about 54 hectares, where 221 practice bases link the classroom to construction sites. Two provincial key laboratories and a provincial collaborative innovation center support research in its fields.
A member of the international alliance of architecture universities along the Belt and Road and of a Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei alliance for construction technology, the school keeps one foot in its region and one in the wider world of building. In a city that built itself for the Olympic Games, teaching the craft of building has a natural home.
