Huaihua, a city in the hills of western Hunan, calls itself the place where a seed changed the world, and its university studies the plants of those hills with unusual seriousness. Huaihua University runs a provincial key laboratory for the research and use of ethnic medicinal plants, alongside centers for the region’s ecology and folk culture. The school itself began in 1958 as a normal college for the local area, and took its present name in 2002.
Its early decades were unsettled: the founding normal college merged, closed and reopened before being renamed the Huaihua Normal College in 1983, began undergraduate teaching in 1998, and became Huaihua University in 2002. Bachelor’s degree rights followed in 2004, and in 2021 the school was approved as a master’s-degree cultivation unit of Hunan, entering the ministry’s teacher-education partnership program the following year.
Sixteen colleges and schools offer 47 undergraduate programs across ten fields, with five national first-class programs and eight teacher-training programs passing national second-level accreditation. Some 19,000 full-time undergraduates are taught by 1,400 faculty members, more than 40 percent of them with senior titles or doctorates, on three campuses covering about 2,114 mu, some 141 hectares.
Research grows from the region: 32 provincial-and-ministerial platforms include a key laboratory for eco-agriculture in the Wuling mountain area, a research base for peace culture, and one for the intangible heritage of local communities, alongside the medicinal-plants laboratory. The school holds 1,169 patents, 216 of them transferred to industry, and has led 523 provincial-and-ministerial projects in five years.
Among 170,000 graduates are the mathematician Xi Nanhua, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the writer Wang Yuewen, along with the singer Chen Sisi. Abroad, the university has signed agreements with 42 universities and institutions in 19 countries, from the United States and Britain to Germany and Hungary, and has hosted students from 19 countries.
In a city that claims a seed changed the world, Huaihua University has made its own bet on the same idea: that the plants of a mountain region, its cultures and its young people can, if studied seriously, change something too. Sixty-odd years after a normal college opened here, the school is still growing, and still planting.
