Nanchang Medical College

Nanchang Medical College was created for a reason written in recent history: in 2020, as the pandemic exposed gaps in China’s public health system, the provincial government decided to build a new medical school from existing pieces, and in January 2021 the ministry of education approved its founding. It is one of the youngest medical universities in China, and one of the best equipped at birth: five top-tier directly affiliated hospitals came with the charter.

The college was assembled from the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Hospital, a college of Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine and a provincial health vocational school, and it admitted its first undergraduate class from 30 provinces in September 2021, entering the province’s master’s-degree cultivation list the following year. Two campuses, Xianghu and Jiulonghu, cover 1,455 mu, about 97 hectares, and serve more than 15,000 full-time students.

Twenty-two undergraduate programs, from clinical medicine and dentistry to public health, nursing, pharmacy and medical imaging, are organized into 12 teaching schools built around a medicine-pharmacy-nursing-technology-management cluster that mirrors the needs of a provincial health system. The curriculum leans applied, with geriatric care management among the newer additions.

Research arrived ready-made: 100 national natural science fund projects are on the books, alongside 1,550 SCI papers, 10 national and 50 provincial research platforms, and three academician workstations. A faculty of 901, nearly 90 percent holding doctorates or master’s degrees, is reinforced by 38 doctoral supervisors and 335 master’s supervisors, and the college’s honorary president is academician Chen Fen’er, a distinguished alumnus.

Clinical training is the college’s strongest card: beyond the five top-tier directly affiliated hospitals, six more affiliated hospitals and a blood research institute extend its reach across Jiangxi, and a cooperation agreement with the Peking Union Medical College gives the young school a senior partner.

A medical school founded after a pandemic needs beds above all, and Nanchang Medical College started with five top-tier hospitals behind it, an endowment most schools take decades to build. Its real test, producing the doctors Jiangxi needs, has just begun.
