Long before it became a university, this school was a cadre academy for the countryside: founded in 1953 as a training school for agriculture and forestry officials, it kept that practical DNA through seven decades of renamings. Shandong Agriculture and Engineering University, established in its present form in 2013, now blends the two halves of its name, agricultural science and engineering, into the agriculture-engineering fusion it calls its signature.
The school passed through the province’s agricultural management cadres college from 1983 and took its present name in 2013, after which it moved steadily toward undergraduate depth: 42 programs, five provincial first-class majors and four national first-class courses now sit under 17 schools.
The curriculum pairs the farm with the factory. Agricultural machinery engineering and facilities agriculture anchor the engineering side, while smart agriculture and food science cover the farming side, and two national new-agriculture reform projects push the fusion forward. Seven provincial expert teams support the region’s modern agriculture industries.
Research serves the rural strategy: 987 projects in five years, including 152 provincial-or-higher ones, with funding past 190 million yuan, and platforms from provincial engineering centers to data-innovation bases backing results that include 170 patents and 15 local standards.
Industry ties reach from county governments to national tech firms: partnerships with Huawei and 360 Group, 11 industry colleges co-built with companies, and strategic agreements with local governments across the province.
Internationally, the university is a founding member of the China-CEEC agriculture alliance, cooperates with nearly 50 institutions in 20-plus countries, and hosts students from 30-plus countries, with entry into the China-US talent program and a Sino-foreign undergraduate project.
Seventy years on, soil and machine, never separated on this campus, where more than 20,300 students study across two campuses covering about 209 hectares in Jinan and Zibo.
