No university in China was born closer to an oilfield. Shandong Institute of Petroleum and Chemical Technology grew out of a technical school of the Shengli Oilfield, founded in 1973, ran for decades as a college of China University of Petroleum, and in 2022 became a provincial public university, the only one in Shandong converted from an independent college.
The school’s path runs through the oilfield’s history: a technical school in 1973, a normal college and a junior college in the 1980s, the China University of Petroleum Shengli College in the modern era, and public university status in 2022, when it also became the only university in the city of Dongying and the only provincial-municipal co-built university in Shandong.
Today 36 undergraduate programs run under 12 schools, from petroleum engineering and geoscience to chemical engineering and smart manufacturing, with the energy cluster at the core. Two programs hold provincial first-class status, and 15 percent of recent graduates have joined China’s top 500 companies.
Research is aimed at the region’s geology. Shale oil exploration and development has its own provincial key laboratory, joined by provincial labs for green hydrogen-electric science and bio-based materials, and a provincial science and technology progress prize and 87 provincial-or-higher projects back the record.
Industry integration runs deep: six modern industry colleges cover carbon neutrality, green energy and smart petrochemicals, and the university trains directly with the equipment makers and energy firms of the Yellow River delta.
About 12,000 students study across a campus of 67 hectares in Dongying, the hub city of the Yellow River delta, and the university is the only undergraduate institution in the city, a status that makes it the local talent pipeline.
Decades on, the school still runs on its original energy, the energy it drew from the Shengli Oilfield in 1973, training the technicians, engineers and researchers the Yellow River delta economy depends on, one cohort at a time.
