In the mountain city of Shaoguan, in northern Guangdong, more than a quarter of the city’s schoolteachers and 217 of the city’s principals are graduates of the same university. Shaoguan University, where teacher training began in 1903, has spent more than a century as the classroom of its region, and in 2024 it added a new title to the old craft: master’s degree-granting university.
The school is a merger of five institutions, each with its own clock. Teacher training dates to 1903, medical education to 1914, and higher education proper to 1958, when a teachers college took shape; over the decades it absorbed a normal college, a polytechnic, a teachers institute, a normal branch school and a medical school before settling into its present form in 2000. The layers of that history still show in the catalog, which spans eleven discipline fields from education to medicine.
Today about 27,000 full-time students study across a campus of about 1,700 hectares, with seventy-two undergraduate programs and two professional master’s programs in agriculture and mechanical engineering. Seventeen colleges carry the load, and the university’s engineering discipline entered the ESI global top 1 percent in 2026, a first for a school better known for classrooms than laboratories.
Teaching remains the core craft. Fourteen provincial first-class programs and five programs certified through teacher-education accreditation anchor the normal side, and the university runs teacher-education practice bases across northern Guangdong. Its graduates staff Shaoguan’s schools, its medical school has trained doctors in the region since 1914, and the university has drafted sixteen local laws and regulations through its research centers.
The region’s economy shows up in the research. A provincial key laboratory for food and drug resources in northern Guangdong, research centers for intelligent agriculture and mechanical equipment, and partnerships with national industrial leaders support work from tea processing to new-energy vehicles. One product with local roots, a vine tea developed on campus, was chosen as a drink for provincial delegations at the National People’s Congress.
A city’s schools are only as good as its teachers, and Shaoguan has measured its university that way since 1903. The university still supplies the measure: in the classrooms of the city, the teacher at the blackboard was often trained by a teacher trained here.
