Cold is this university’s specialty: Tianjin University of Commerce runs a ministry engineering center for cold storage and a ministry key laboratory for agricultural cold chains, turning the humble business of keeping things cold into a research strength few universities anywhere match. In 2024 the school took part in a project that won a national science and technology first prize, a first in its history, and the connection to refrigeration was no accident.
The university was founded in 1980 as the Tianjin Institute of Commerce, answering to the national commerce ministry and later the domestic trade ministry, and it took its present name in 2007 after switching to shared central-local management in 1998. Its campus covers 1,400 mu, about 93 hectares, and serves 23,000 students through 13 colleges built around its founding idea: business management and commercial technology belong together.
Fifty-six undergraduate programs include 13 national first-class programs and four national characteristic programs, with 11 first-level master’s disciplines and 12 professional master’s categories on the graduate side. Three fields, engineering, agricultural science and social sciences, rank in the ESI global top 1 percent, and 14 of its researchers appear on the world’s top 2 percent most-cited scientists list.
Beyond the cold-chain platforms, the university runs a commerce-ministry innovation center for time-honored brands and a research institute for carbon neutrality, and it leads the municipal standardization committee for carbon peaking. National projects number nearly a hundred in recent years, provincial-and-above awards pass a hundred, and the 2024 first prize capped a run that also includes deep ties with industry: more than 400 cooperation agreements with companies from JD.com to local enterprises.
Abroad, the university works with 50-plus universities in countries from the United States, Britain, France and Russia to Japan and Korea, runs undergraduate and master’s programs with partners including Charles Sturt University of Australia and Eastern Michigan University, and co-supervises doctoral students with the University of Paris-Saclay and the University of Huddersfield. Its faculty of 1,713 includes six national-level talents.
Cold chains, century-old brands and a first national science award: the specialties of a business university that has spent forty-five years proving that commerce and engineering can be one discipline, kept fresh at the right temperature.
