Born in 1955 as a support project for one of the first five-year plan’s 156 key industrial works, Xi’an Technological University has spent seven decades inside China’s defense industry. It is one of the country’s seven military-industry universities, the only one in northwest China with a complete bachelor-to-doctoral chain, and its classrooms and laboratories feed engineers directly into the weapons and equipment sector.
The university began as an industry school under the arms industry, became the Xi’an Institute of Technology in 1965, and took its present name in 2006 after the defense industry handed it to Shaanxi province in 1999. Its character was set early and has not loosened: a military-industry university in everything but name, it lists five national defense characteristic disciplines among its strengths.
Today two campuses in Xi’an cover about 106 hectares of floor space, with over 23,000 students across bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. Five first-level doctoral programs and three postdoctoral stations anchor the graduate side, alongside 16 first-level master’s programs, and materials science, engineering and chemistry all rank in the ESI global top 1 percent.
Research is aimed squarely at defense equipment. Four national platforms, including a national-local joint engineering research center for precision and ultra-precision machining, lead 46 provincial-level and above bases, and the university has completed some 3,000 research projects for military and civilian agencies. Five second prizes in the national science and technology progress awards mark a track record in optics, special machining and lightweight alloys.
The international side runs through a Sino-Russian joint institute with Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, approved as a Chinese-foreign cooperative institution, and ties to more than 50 universities in 30-plus countries. Its faculty of 1,168 full-time teachers includes winners of national talent programs, and 140,000 graduates have gone out to industry and defense over the decades.
A university that began as a cog in the first five-year plan now makes its own components: engineers, researchers and technologies for an industry that still defines it, seventy years on. The workshops of 1955 have become laboratories, but the contract has not changed, and neither has the school’s standing as the northwest’s only complete military-industry university.
