Xingtai Medical College began life in 1958 as the Hebei Xingtai Eye University, a name that surprises almost everyone who meets it today. The school has since answered to many names, from an eye-specialty college to a provincial health school to a medical college, until in May 2024 it was elevated to a full undergraduate medical college.
Between those two turning points lies a school organized around an unusual geometry: one campus cluster, three affiliated hospitals and a care center for the elderly, a pattern the university calls one school, three hospitals, one center. All three affiliated hospitals are grade-A tertiary institutions, and the care center anchors a teaching-medical-eldercare model that trains students inside real clinical and nursing settings.
Two campuses, on Steel Road and Huangsi, cover 1,198 mu, about 80 hectares, with 430,000 square meters of buildings and 259 laboratory and training rooms. Twelve undergraduate programs, 17 specialist programs and five upgrade programs are offered to some 14,000 full-time students, taught by 937 full-time teachers, of whom roughly three-quarters hold master’s or doctoral degrees.
Three programs have central-government funding and two carry national backbone status. Beyond the classroom, the school runs a national training base for nurses, a national training base for elderly-care workers, a national cardiovascular nursing training base, and was named among the ministry’s first campus first-aid education pilots. It also runs a dentistry program jointly with Lincoln University College of Malaysia.
The results show in the numbers: a 97.62 percent pass rate on the nursing licensure examination, employment outcomes above 95 percent, and 120,000 health workers trained since the school opened. Its 25 provincial and municipal research platforms include a national drug clinical trial institution and a provincial academician workstation. From an eye school in 1958 to a medical college that fuses teaching, hospital care and eldercare, Xingtai Medical College has kept widening its view of what a medical education should cover.
