Mount Tai has been climbed for three thousand years, and the university at its foot has made climbing a habit. Taishan University, named for the mountain, describes itself with three colors: an engineering core, a cultural-tourism specialty, and a teacher-education base. It sits below a UNESCO dual World Heritage site, the only campus in China with that particular landmark.
The school’s roots reach back to a teachers academy founded in 1905, continued through a normal college established in 1958, and became Taishan University in 2002. Master’s authorization followed in 2024, and the first cohort of graduate students enrolled in 2025.
Today three professional master’s programs, in electronic information, biology and medicine, and tourism management, run under 57 undergraduate programs across nine disciplines. Four national first-class programs and 12 teaching-certified normal programs carry the three-color identity into the catalog.
The teacher-education base is the most visible legacy. More than 260,000 graduates have left the university, and 30 percent of the city’s school principals studied here, a record that earned the campus its local name: the cradle of Tai’an’s teachers. It is one of the province’s 19 teacher-education bases and among the first nine universities in Shandong to admit government-funded normal students.
Research follows the mountain’s culture and the region’s industry. The Mount Tai studies program, built with Shandong University, has its own research base, and a comprehensive chronicle of the mountain won the province’s top social science prize. With the Shandong Cultural Tourism Group and other firms, the university runs provincial industry colleges for smart tourism, artificial intelligence and modern medicine, and horizontal project funding has passed 600 million yuan.
Internationally, the university was named a national Chinese-language education base in 2000, one of the first in the country, and cooperates with 20-plus institutions abroad through exchange programs and a Sino-foreign undergraduate project launched in 2022.
At the foot of the mountain that emperors climbed, the mountain and the school share one ambition. More than 24,000 students study across two campuses and a teaching site in Tai’an, taught by a faculty of 1,300-plus.
