Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine was the first TCM school on the mainland to admit students from Taiwan and among the earliest to take foreign students. Its graduates now practice across the United States, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Southeast Asia, and the university runs Fujian’s first overseas TCM center, in the Philippines, with ties to institutions in 30-plus countries and regions. Fujian’s first Sino-foreign cooperation project in a medical field is also run here, in the nursing program. Its signature gatherings include the Cross-Strait Traditional Chinese Medicine Academic Symposium, now in its 17th session, and the Cross-Strait TCM Culture Study Camp, in its 16th.
The school was founded in 1958, one of the earliest higher TCM institutions in China. It has twice been named a key university of Fujian, is today a provincial “Double First-Class” university, and is jointly built by the provincial government and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Thirteen colleges and two research institutes enroll more than 16,000 full-time students, 3,100 of them postgraduates, across 20 undergraduate programs, nine of them rated national first-class. It grants doctorates in four categories including Chinese medicine and Chinese pharmacy, and master’s degrees in six first-level disciplines. Clinical medicine and pharmacology and toxicology sit in the ESI global top 1 percent. Two campuses in Fuzhou cover roughly 67 hectares.
Its faculty of more than 1,100 full-time teachers among 6,000-plus staff includes three masters of Chinese medicine, five nationally honored Chinese medicine physicians, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences holding a joint professorship. Research has earned 891 awards at national and provincial levels, including a second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and rests on platforms such as two national-local joint engineering research centers and a ministry key laboratory.
Five directly affiliated units act as teaching hospitals, led by the People’s Hospital of Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a national TCM inheritance and innovation center, and a rehabilitation hospital that hosts the national TCM rehabilitation research center. Beyond them, 11 affiliated hospitals and 10 clinical colleges provide clinical training. Two more directly affiliated hospitals and a provincial academy of TCM sciences round out the network, which spans eight national clinical key specialties including rehabilitation, anorectal and gastrointestinal care. The university’s physical therapy and occupational therapy programs have passed the international accreditation of the World Physiotherapy and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.
Since 1958 the university has kept its founding promise: teaching the medicine of needles and herbs, and carrying it abroad. The clinic in Manila and the classrooms in Fuzhou teach the same tradition.
