Minnan Normal University campus

Minnan Normal University grew up in a place with a voice of its own: southern Fujian, where the Minnan dialect is heard across Southeast Asia. The university in Zhangzhou has turned that regional identity into a scholarly specialty, with a research center for Minnan culture at its heart. In 2025 it won the right to recommend its graduates directly to master’s programs, capping years of climbing from a local teachers college.

The school was founded in 1958, began undergraduate education in 1963 as Fujian Second Normal College, and took its present name in 2013 after decades as Zhangzhou Normal College. In 2012 it won a state-designated doctoral program in Minnan culture and cross-strait exchange studies, gained doctorate-granting status in 2021, and was named a Fujian “Double First-Class” university in 2022. Its motto, “Knowledge, Truth, Aspiration and Dedication,” still frames the campus’s mission.

Two campuses, Jiangbin and Yuanshan, cover over 2,400 mu, about 160 hectares. Sixty-five undergraduate programs span ten fields of study and enroll 22,000-plus full-time students. The faculty of 1,400-plus full-time teachers includes 700-plus with senior titles, alongside ten national-level high-caliber talents and 180-plus provincial-level ones.

Academically, the university holds one doctoral program, in Chinese language and literature, and 28 master’s programs, with Chinese language and literature and mathematics named provincial first-class disciplines. Twenty-one undergraduate programs are rated first-class at national or provincial level, and the university counts 71 first-class courses and 40 teaching achievement awards.

Research centers give the school its regional stamp: besides Minnan culture studies, an Indochina research center, a fungi industry engineering center and a key laboratory for modern separation and analysis science. Its Minnan culture work extends to Taiwan studies, and with the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots it co-built Yuanshan College as a training base for the federation’s staff and Taiwan compatriots. A language promotion base designated by the state anchors its work in Chinese language education. Scholars at the school have led national social-science key projects, and it cleared the ministry’s undergraduate teaching review again in 2023.

Internationally, the university runs Aston College with Britain’s Aston University, a Sino-foreign institution covering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, and a joint program with Italy’s Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. It cooperates with 90-plus universities worldwide, maintains exchanges with 30-plus universities in Taiwan, and has hosted students from 40-plus countries. A pilot university for enrolling Taiwan students, it is authorized to recruit bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral candidates from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese communities, and has run the Fujian-Taiwan joint training program since 2011, sending more than 1,500 mainland students to study in Taiwan. Since 1958 it has produced more than 120,000 graduates, many of them carrying the pragmatic spirit of Minnan culture into classrooms across China.
