Hunan Women’s University is the first public women’s university in China, founded in 1985 and one of only three independent women’s undergraduate universities in the country since 1949. It is also the only one of the three co-built by the All-China Women’s Federation with a provincial government, and it chairs the national alliance of women’s universities.
It began in 1985 as a vocational college founded by the provincial women’s federation, was elevated to undergraduate status in 2010, won approval as a master’s-degree cultivation unit of Hunan in 2021, and passed the ministry’s undergraduate teaching review in 2025. Wang Guangmei, China’s former first lady, was the school’s honorary president during her lifetime. The campus sits in Changsha, next to the provincial government, covering 39.8 hectares with 192 on-campus training rooms and 196 off-campus internship bases.
Ten colleges offer 41 undergraduate programs built around the school’s distinctive brief, the elderly, children, women, families and communities, with two national first-class programs in home economics and tourism management, 11 provincial first-class programs in fields from women’s studies to social work, and 15 ministry-designated programs in newer fields such as gerontology and artificial intelligence. Four disciplines rank as provincial applied-distinctive fields, and some 12,000 students from 23 provinces are enrolled.
Research follows the same focus. The school hosts the country’s first women’s education research base, a national women and gender research and training center among the first batch, a Nushu culture research base built with local government, a key laboratory for women’s big data, and four provincial modern industry colleges for home economics, cultural tourism, smart eldercare and digital creative communication.
A faculty of 737, including 534 full-time teachers and 174 with doctorates, teaches the school’s signature fields, and international ties are unusually deep for a college of this size: a fashion design program with the Academy of Fine Arts of L’Aquila in Italy, an international aging research center with the University of Warwick in Britain, a design center with Andong Science College in South Korea, and partnerships with nearly 40 universities in countries from the United States to Russia, Japan and Malaysia.
Virtue, Wisdom, Honesty and Excellence: the motto of Hunan Women’s University reads like a summary of its four decades. From home economics to artificial intelligence, from Nushu culture to global aging research, the school trains the women who run households, classrooms, hospitals and companies, and its founding premise, that higher education shaped for one half of the population serves the whole of it, has proven itself over time.
