Qilu University of Technology is two institutions in one: a university and the largest comprehensive natural-science research organization in Shandong. The 2017 merger that created it combined a 1948-born industrial school with the Shandong Academy of Sciences, and the two now operate as a single body with a single staff.
The lineage runs through a field school founded in 1948 by the army’s Jiaodong command, a long stretch as the Shandong Institute of Light Industry, and the Qilu University of Technology name from 2013; the academy side traces to the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Shandong branch of 1958. The merged institution kept the strengths of both: engineering education on one side, the province’s biggest research apparatus on the other.
Today 26 teaching and research units run 69 undergraduate programs under 5 doctoral programs and 18 first-level master’s programs, with nine disciplines in the ESI global top 1 percent across eleven categories. One peak discipline and three provincial first-class disciplines mark the academic heights.
Research infrastructure is the merger’s real dividend: the university co-leads 2 national key laboratories, a national supercomputing center and a national engineering research center, backed by 16 national platforms and some 80 provincial ones. The prize shelf holds a National Science and Technology Progress first prize, four second prizes, and a Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, alongside 3,700 patents.
Teaching has kept its industrial character: 20 national first-class programs, four national featured programs, and a student record of eight golds in the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition, a streak unmatched among Shandong’s universities. The school has trained nearly 300,000 graduates and carries a nickname the province repeats without irony, “the cradle of entrepreneurs, the soil of engineers.”
Social service is written into the charter. In the last five years QLU has built research ties with more than 40 governments and 100 leading firms, spun off 70-plus technology companies, and created direct economic benefit of more than 100 billion yuan, earning a place among the national technology-transfer demonstration institutions.
Internationally, the university has agreements with 120-plus universities in 50 countries and regions, a joint institution with Ukraine’s Kyiv Polytechnic, and 102 international research platforms, with seven foreign experts holding China’s Friendship Award. Its campuses and institutes spread across Jinan, Qingdao, Jining, Heze and Dezhou, with 38,000-plus students and a main base in the Changqing district of Jinan. A school born as an army workshop in 1948 now runs the province’s largest research engine, and the engine is still being tuned.
