Graduates of Gannan Medical University have outscored the national average on the medical licensing exam for 20 consecutive years, a record few medical schools in China can match. The university behind that record sits in Ganzhou, the old revolutionary base in southern Jiangxi, and it also runs a national key laboratory for new drug target discovery and development, unusual firepower for a provincial medical college.
The school began in 1941 as a provincial midwifery school, passed through a medical vocational form, and became a medical junior college in 1958 before gaining undergraduate status as Gannan Medical College in 1988. Master’s degree rights followed in 2013, and in November 2023 the education ministry approved its present name, Gannan Medical University. Three campuses in Ganzhou cover about 2,600 mu, some 173 hectares.
Thirty-one undergraduate programs include two national first-class programs in clinical medicine and nursing, with eleven more rated first-class at provincial level and two provincial first-class disciplines. Clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, and chemistry all sit in the ESI global top 1 percent, supported by four first-level master’s disciplines and seven professional master’s categories. Its 18,257 full-time students are taught by more than 1,000 full-time faculty, 600-plus of them with senior titles.
Research pairs the national key laboratory with a ministry key laboratory for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease prevention, among 30 national and provincial platforms, and recent results have appeared in journals from The Lancet Oncology to Nature Communications. Teaching credentials are equally solid: the school was the 13th in China to pass the national clinical medicine accreditation, in 2013, and its clinical medicine program has beaten the national licensing exam average every year since 2005.
Three directly affiliated hospitals, including a first affiliated hospital rated among the country’s top 100 hospitals, plus twelve more affiliated hospitals and nine teaching hospitals, anchor clinical training across the region. International reach is steady rather than showy: the university began enrolling international students in 2005, has trained nearly 700 of them, mostly from Pakistan, India, Nigeria and Tanzania, and 85 percent of those graduates have earned medical licenses. It chairs the China-Cuba higher medical education alliance, holds a ministry-approved joint biotechnology program with Lincoln Memorial University of the United States, and has sent its students abroad through a Belt and Road medical education network.
Born as a county midwifery school in 1941 and reborn as a university in 2023, Gannan Medical has spent more than eight decades doing the same work in increasingly demanding forms: training the people who sit at the bedside of the sick. Its licensing exam record says it plainly, 20 years at a time.
