Two materials define Tiangong University: threads and membranes. Its textile science and engineering discipline earned an A-plus in the national discipline assessment and a place in China’s double first-class program, while its membrane technology, developed at a national key laboratory for separation membranes that the university leads, has broken foreign monopolies in materials used from water filtration to industrial gas separation. Few universities anywhere combine the two quite like this one.
The university traces its history to a weaving course opened at a Beijing industrial college in 1912, making it one of the oldest centers of textile education in China. It took its present name in 2000 and entered the national double first-class program in 2017, winning renewal in 2022, and it is co-built by the education ministry, the Tianjin government and the national defense science and technology administration. Its main campus covers over 1.5 million square meters.
Sixty-two undergraduate programs include 25 national first-class programs and six national characteristic programs, with nine programs accredited by international engineering standards. Six fields rank in the ESI global top 1 percent, and the graduate side runs six first-level doctoral programs, 27 first-level master’s programs and five postdoctoral stations, serving 18,000 undergraduates and 6,500 postgraduates.
Research carries the national weight: 16 national science and technology awards, a thousand-plus patents, and platforms from the membrane laboratory to a national joint research center and two education-ministry key laboratories. The university has spun its technology into industry through more than a hundred transfer platforms, including research institutes in Cangzhou, Shaoxing and a space technology academy, and it was among the first universities in China named a national intellectual property pilot.
Abroad, ties reach 110 universities in 60-plus countries, students from 70-plus countries study on campus, and the university runs the only Confucius Institute in Burkina Faso, along with membership in the European Textile Universities alliance. Its 1,600 full-time teachers include one academician and eight recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
More than a century after a weaving course opened in Beijing in 1912, Tiangong University still spins the same thread, though its fibers are now measured in nanometers and its membranes filter the air and water of modern industry. The loom has changed; the craft has not.
