Ask who staffs Tianjin’s classrooms and the answer comes back to one campus: Tianjin Normal University supplies 75 percent of the city’s teachers, and the same school teaches Chinese to the world. It runs Africa’s first Confucius Institute, at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, a partnership rated a global model institute, and its international Chinese education program, begun in 1964, is among the oldest in China.
The university’s history reaches back to a girls’ academy founded in 1904 and a women’s normal school of 1911, making it the heir of a century of Tianjin teacher training. It was established under its first name, Tianjin Teachers College, in 1958, took its present name in 1982, and was re-formed in 1999 by merging with the city’s normal junior college and education institute. Since then it has been the only normal university in Tianjin dedicated to supplying teachers for basic education.
Seventy-two undergraduate programs include 26 national first-class programs, the most among the city’s municipal universities, and the graduate side runs 12 first-level doctoral programs, 31 first-level master’s programs and nine postdoctoral stations. Two disciplines earned A-class ratings in the national assessment, and six fields, from chemistry to psychology, sit in the ESI global top 1 percent.
Its campus is a talking point in itself: 3,500 mu, about 233 hectares, includes 771 mu of natural lakes and wetlands, an unusual green lung for a Chinese university. Research funding has passed 100 million yuan a year, supported by an education-ministry key research base and 48 provincial-and-above platforms, and the faculty of 2,524 includes two foreign academicians and 93 national-level leading talents.
International Chinese education is the school’s signature abroad: five Confucius Institutes and one independent Confucius Classroom, 76,000 international students from 86 countries trained since 1964, 1,253 volunteer Chinese teachers sent to 50 countries, and one of its professors serving as president of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching. At home, the university co-built an international Chinese teacher education college with the education ministry and the Tianjin government.
For more than a century, the school that began as a girls’ academy in 1904 has done one thing with remarkable consistency: put teachers into Tianjin’s classrooms and principals into Tianjin’s schools, and put Chinese into the world’s classrooms, one Confucius Institute at a time.
