One of the most unusual research centers in Chinese higher education studies the navel orange, and it belongs to a normal university. Gannan Normal University hosts a national navel orange engineering research center, a fitting specialty for a school in Gannan, the region that gives the center its subject matter, alongside a second distinction: it runs West Africa’s first Confucius Institute, with the University of Sierra Leone.
The school was founded in June 1958 as a normal junior college, became a provincial undergraduate teachers college in 1984, won master’s degree rights in 2003, took its present name in 2016, and was approved in 2024 as a doctoral degree granting institution. Its three main campuses in Ganzhou are joined by a fourth in Nankang, and more than 27,000 full-time students, including 2,900 postgraduates, study across 21 teaching units.
Sixty-two undergraduate programs span ten fields of study, led by eleven national first-class programs, and all seventeen of its teacher-training programs have passed national second-level accreditation. Chemistry holds a doctoral program, seventeen first-level master’s disciplines and nineteen professional master’s categories support the graduate side, and chemistry and plant and animal science both sit in the ESI global top 1 percent.
Research clusters around the region’s strengths. Beyond the navel orange center, four national platforms include an education-ministry key research base for revolutionary spirit and cultural resources, a national furniture design center and a forestry key laboratory for woody spices. More than 300 national research projects have been funded, results have appeared in Science and Nature, and the school’s humanities scholars work on Hakka culture, Yangming philosophy and the history of the Jiangxi Soviet, a legacy it also carries in China’s first journal of red-culture studies.
Teaching remains the school’s first calling: some 190,000 graduates have made it the cradle of teachers on the red soil, and its students have won a Plum Blossom Award in theater, a gold medal at the London Paralympics and top prizes in national teaching competitions. Abroad, the Confucius Institute in Sierra Leone has been rated an advanced institute globally, a music program runs with Penza State University of Russia, and students from 33 countries study on campus.
Growing two very different crops, oranges and teachers, is the quiet specialty of Gannan Normal University: one feeds the orchards of its region, the other fills its classrooms, and both were on display the year it became, at last, a doctoral university.
