Only one university in southern China is devoted to the oil industry, and it is owned, in effect, by the industry itself. Guangdong University of Petrochemical Technology is jointly built by the provincial government and China’s three largest oil companies, Sinopec, PetroChina and CNOOC, an arrangement that makes it the country’s most direct pipeline between a university and the petroleum business. Its own slogan says it plainly: born for oil, devoted to oil.
The school sits in Maoming, the base of one of China’s biggest refining and petrochemical complexes, and began in 1954 as a training school for the industry. Three campuses cover about 2,050 hectares, and more than twenty thousand students study sixty-three undergraduate programs, nearly three-quarters of them in science and engineering, taught by a faculty that includes winners of national talent programs and two Pearl River Scholars.
The academic core follows the refinery. Chemical engineering and technology holds national first-class status, eleven programs have passed engineering-education accreditation, and eight master’s programs in fields from control science to materials and chemical engineering sit above a doctoral cultivation plan. Four disciplines, engineering, chemistry, environment and ecology, and materials science, rank in the ESI global top 1 percent.
Research serves the industry that created it. Two provincial key laboratories, an academician workstation and thirteen provincial engineering research centers support work with the local refining giants, from Sinopec’s Maoming refinery to national equipment makers, and the university has won provincial science and technology first prizes in petrochemical automation.
Its graduates staff the country’s refineries. Alumni have become managers, engineers and government officials across the petrochemical industry, and the university’s international reach includes an unusual program that trains scholarship students sent by Nigeria’s petroleum development foundation, alongside partners in more than a dozen countries.
The refinery stacks line the coast of Maoming, and the university beside them has spent seventy years doing one thing well: turning students into the people who keep the industry running. The oil flows through the pipelines, and the people who built them came from here.
