Shenzhen opened its newest university with the speed of its own factories. Shenzhen Technology University was approved in November 2018 and admitted undergraduates, master’s and doctoral students in 2019, with the graduate programs initially run jointly with Shenzhen University. The campus in Pingshan District has spent about 3.3 billion yuan on laboratories and equipment, a third of it on large instruments.
The university’s science base matured fast enough to break a record: chemistry, materials science and engineering entered the ESI top 1 percent in the fastest such climb in the city. Optical engineering, integrated circuits and the Internet of Things are provincial key disciplines, and the school of 17 colleges and 41 programs is built around engineering.
Faculty give the speed its substance: more than 940 full-time teachers include four academicians, 126 professors and 238 associate professors, 86 percent of them with doctorates, 60 percent with overseas experience and 40 percent with corporate research backgrounds, and over 400 hold high-level talent titles.
What defines the university is the depth of its ties to industry. It works with 279 leading companies, runs six industry colleges and 24 special classes named for partner ecosystems, from Huawei’s Kunpeng to Tencent’s security team and Baidu’s AI group, and its faculty members have founded 126 companies with support from a technology transfer office that was the first of its kind in southern China.
The results show in the graduates. Ninety-two percent of the class of 2025 had found work or further study by the university’s count, 80 percent stayed in Shenzhen and 90 percent remained in the Greater Bay Area, with some hired by Huawei, Tencent, BYD and Samsung and others admitted to Tsinghua and Yale. Student workshops for racing cars, robots and drones feed the same pipeline.
Internationally the university has built joint laboratories with universities in Germany and Switzerland and holds partnerships with 142 overseas institutions, sending students on exchange to the Technical University of Munich. A university built for Shenzhen’s factories is now exporting its model, and the engineers it trains are the point.
