China calls this school the cradle of its vocational teacher training, and the title is literal: it runs the only complete bachelor-to-doctoral pipeline in the country for training teachers who teach at vocational schools, and 42,000 of its graduates now teach at 6,000 vocational colleges nationwide, the highest rate of its kind in China. Its students have also won the Albert Vidal Award, the top prize at the WorldSkills contest, the world’s biggest skills competition.
Founded in 1979 as a technician normal college under the national labor bureau, the school became a teachers college for vocational education and took its present name in 2010. It was the first university of its kind in China to win master’s degree rights, in 2003, and the first to win doctoral rights, in 2024, completing the full ladder it now teaches on. Its campus in Tianjin covers 543,000 square meters and hosts 17,000 students.
Dual certificates are the school’s signature: vocational teachers graduate with both academic and skill credentials, an approach that won national teaching achievement first prizes in 1997 and 2005 and a national grand prize in 2022 for its work on Luban Workshops, the vocational colleges China builds abroad. Fifty-two undergraduate programs and a training center that is the largest of its kind at any Chinese university support the model, with engineering in the ESI top 1 percent.
Skills are the school’s native language: it hosts the national research center for WorldSkills, its students have taken 11 gold medals in three national skills competitions, and its industrial-4.0 team has won three consecutive titles. Two national platforms, a joint engineering research center for intelligent vehicle-road coordination and a national laboratory for automotive die manufacturing, anchor the research side alongside a national science park.
Its influence now runs on rails to Africa and the Americas: the university helped build Ethiopia’s first top-tier vocational college, runs the first Luban Workshop in the Americas, in Nicaragua, and hosts the only Chinese vice-chair of the world vocational education development alliance, after co-hosting the alliance’s global conference twice. Three Confucius Institutes and seven Confucius Classrooms on three continents round out the reach, and students from 30-plus countries study on campus.
The cradle of China’s vocational teacher training has become a workshop for the world: from the first Luban Workshop in the Americas to the first top-tier vocational college in Ethiopia, the school that taught China how to teach skills is now teaching the same lesson abroad.
