Ningbo University (NBU) is a dynamic comprehensive university located in the historic port city of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. As a key provincial public institution jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Zhejiang Provincial Government, and the Ningbo Municipal Government, NBU is a proud member of China’s national “Double First-Class” construction initiative. The university adheres to the motto “Seeking Truth from Facts” and “Applying Knowledge to the World”, aiming to become a world-class research university.

📜 History Forged by Visionaries

Unlike many ancient universities, Ningbo University has a modern origin marked by generosity and ambition. It was established in 1986 with a landmark donation from Sir Yue-Kong Pao, the “World King of Ships” and a beloved native of Ningbo. The founding was supported by prestigious institutions including Zhejiang University, Fudan University, and Peking University, giving NBU a strong academic start from the very beginning. In subsequent years, the university expanded through strategic mergers, absorbing Ningbo Normal College and Zhejiang Shuichan College. In 2017, NBU achieved national recognition by being selected for the “Double First-Class” initiative.

🏫 A World-Class Campus by the Sea

NBU boasts a modern and well-equipped campus designed for 21st-century learning. It spans five campuses covering over 3,000 acres (approximately 1.24 million square meters). The university library houses a vast collection of nearly 4.6 million books, and the university is affiliated with nine hospitals to support medical education and research.

🔬 World-Class Research and Academic Prowess

Ningbo University is a powerhouse of multidisciplinary education and research, hosting nearly 30,000 full-time students, including over 1,000 international students from around the globe. Its research impact is demonstrated by 12 subject areas that have entered the global top 1% according to Essential Science Indicators (ESI):

  • Engineering

  • (and six others)

Mechanics has been designated as a national “Double First-Class” construction discipline, while its Aquaculture (Fisheries) program is a provincial leading subject. The university has received numerous national and provincial science and technology awards.

🌍 Global Recognition and Rankings

Though young, NBU’s academic reputation is growing rapidly. In the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) , Ningbo University is placed in the 501–600 band globally. The same year, China’s prestigious Soft Science (Shanghai Ranking) placed the university at 78th in China.

🤝 A Global Gateway for Collaboration

Located in Ningbo, a key hub on the Maritime Silk Road, NBU has a strong international outlook. It is one of the first “Zhejiang International Characteristic Universities”. A standout feature is its collaboration with the University of Angers in France, including a joint institute and a dual-degree undergraduate program launched in 2025. The university also holds cooperative agreements with partners in Japan, Poland, Macau, Greece, and Pakistan, as well as active involvement with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

🏙️ Campus Life and Community Impact

The lush, green campus provides an inspiring environment for study and personal growth. The university is recognized as a “Ningbo International People-to-People Exchange Base”, and its faculty and alumni have been named “Honorary Citizens of Ningbo” – a testament to NBU’s contribution to the city’s economy and international stature.
